World Coral Reefs are About to Get Wiped Off

US government scientists have warned that large-scale coral destruction world over could permanently destroy the unique ecosystems.  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is US government body which monitors various dimensions of oceans. The scientist gave latest figures to the press. The data points out that the bleaching activities have destroyed around 12 percent of coral cover last year. The corals take long time to redevelop after systematic composition of dead remains. Therefore the researchers predict permanent death of 12,000 sq km coral area.
But this is just the end of beginning. If the destruction continues at this rate for two more years, many species residing in the corals would be lost. The corals in the Caribbean region are turning plain white due to warmer western Atlantic Ocean and its pollution. The ocean pollution will affect these complex ecosystems in tropical waters. The government monitors Coral Reef Watch Program through NOAA. Programs director Dr Mark Eakin informed that the exact figures of permanent destruction are not available yet.
The studies on the corals are very rare. The last survey was conducted in 1998 followed by small study in 2010. The University of Queensland professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg said that the NOAA data reveals the scale of this damage. He is director at the Global Change Institute. The bleaching of coral never happened at this scale in the recorded history of world.  The warming events triggered by El Nino during 1998 in Pacific Ocean wiped off around 19 percent of world’s coral reefs.
