Hundreds Protest Against Pollution from South China Coal Plant

On Sunday hundreds of residents from Guangdong, a province in Southern China, protested against the expansion of a power plant in the area which is powered coal, state media reported. The latest demonstration goes on to show that there is in an increase in discontent with regards to the expansion which has been initiated in South China.

Ever since the power plant began operations back in 2008, there have been numerous complaints which have been raised by the residents and they were angered by the fact that the second phase of the power plant had been approved by officials, Xinhua news agency reported.

"There has been a strong police presence, though no reports of violence since the protest began at around 10 a.m.," Xinhua said.
In a petition that was called for in March, residents had collected over 10,000 signatures, it added. The petition was called for so as to oppose the planned expansion.

The news agency however did not offer any more details with regards to the incident, however there are some photos which are circulating online on Chinese social media which showed hundreds of residents who were matching in the streets. Some of the residents were holding banners which were denouncing the projects, stating that the project in itself is not good for their health and the blue skies.

That said a statement issued out by the Heyuan government indicated a different story. According to the statement almost 200 hundred people participated in the protest.

"There was no conflict. We are having a meeting right now to study the issue. City government leaders have gone to see protesters and communicate with them," the statement said.
