U.S. Earthquakes Pose Risk To Record 140 Million Americans: Research

On Wednesday, experts stated that more that 143 million people who are living in America in 48 neighboring states are at a high risk from earthquakes.

According to a joint report that was issued out by the California Geological Survey, the U.S. Geological Service (USGS) and the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), more than 28 million people in the U.S. are likely to experience strong earth tremors during their lifetimes. In addition to that, the joint report indicates that it will cost at least $4.5 billion per year so as to build the losses which have been caused by the strong tremors and earthquakes.

Bill Leith, a co-author of the joint report as well as USGS’s senior science advisor, states that, “This analysis of data from the new National Seismic Hazard Maps reveals that significantly more Americans are exposed to earthquake shaking.”

Leith went on to state that the increase exposure to tremors which have been reflected both in the population living in areas which are at a high risk along the country’s Pacific coastline as well as a change in hazard assessment.

Over the past few months, Connecticut has received a number of minor tremors, something that have surprised many given the fact that the region rarely feels the earthquake.

Earthquakes have also been felt in Texas, California, Nevada and Idaho.

According to Kishor Jaiswal, a USGS research contractor, “Earthquakes remain an important threat to our economy."

"While the West coast may carry the larger burden of potential losses and the greatest threat from the strongest shaking, this report shows that the threat from earthquakes is widespread."
